It is contained in the atmosphere at 0.00052% by volume. Its name was taken from the Greek word for the sun (Helios) since the gas was discovered as spectral rays of sunlight in the atmosphere. Helium can be found in relatively abundant quantities in natural gas in North America sometimes exceeding 7 or 8 percent.
